Chapter Eight

“I’m surprised you even know who he was. When I met him he was something of a recluse,” Cleo said the following evening.

“Of course I know of him,” Michael replied. “All parafolk do.” Doing his best to control how upset he still was from her revelations the night before, he helped Cleo select costumes from the studio’s abandoned costume bank for the evening’s filming. It was normally impolite to make disparaging comments about a nightwalker’s maker, and he didn’t want to offend Cleo.

Still, it really was hard to not say how much he despised Rodriquez. He’d heard too many stories about the nightwalker.

“What do you know about him?”

Michael considered saying nothing but decided someone would tell her soon enough. It might as well be him.

“He was a renegade. Made up his own rules and wouldn’t follow those of others. Some of the things he did…well, they got the rest of us in trouble and for that he was kicked out of parafolk society.”

Interestingly, that didn’t surprise her. Most likely she’d already known some of it. After all, she’d lived with the man.

“That explains why we were all alone. He told me there were no others like us around and I guess for him that was true.” She held up a simple white gown. “You think this would do for the medieval story?”

She seemed to be taking this really well. Either that or she really didn’t want to talk about her maker. Either way was fine with him. “I think it would be great.”

Cleo smiled at him and pulled a tunic and tight pants off the shelf. “These would work for your part.”

“Oh, no. I’m not wearing tights.”

She fluttered her eyelashes at him. “Oh, but you’ll look so dashing in them. You have really great legs, you know.”

“I do?” He growled in return, feeling himself giving in.

“Oh yes…I can’t wait to see you in them. And they’ll look so good on camera.”

Michael held out his arms and let her pile the offending clothing in them. He’d spent the afternoon with Charlie, the real estate agent, going over the paperwork for the house he wanted. They’d even set up closing for a week from now so he’d be able to move in before Vlad and Sam got back from their honeymoon.

So much paperwork to sign to buy a house, even outright from the funds of the dummy corporation he’d set to manage his finances. His hand still felt cramped from signing his name so many times. But he had a house now, a nice one to offer Cleo. Once she saw it, he knew she’d love it, but if she didn’t, he’d find another place and go though the whole thing again, no matter how bad his hand hurt.

About that point he realized he’d do anything for Cleo. Even wear tights.

With one last roll of his eyes he followed the slender figure out of the costume bank. It was far too late for caution. He was well and truly hooked.
